We choose growing methods intended to build soil fertility, lively ecosystems, and healthy food. Our practices include crop rotation and diversity, cover crops and row cover. We add composted manures, minerals and mulch to the soil to provide the necessary nutrients for plant growth and encourage biological activity. We believe these methods promote a sustainable system and create produce of superior taste and quality. Located in Nelson County, Virginia, we offer our produce through a vegetable subscription and at local farmer's markets. Please enjoy our website, and feel free to contact us for more information or for a farm tour.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Vegetable SubscriptionThere are many different types of CSA's but they typically all work in the same way: Community members pre-pay for their food in the early part of the year in exchange for a weekly box of produce during the growing season. This method gives farmers a source of income when they need it most, to buy seeds and supplies for the growing season. Members enjoy the benefits of having fresh, delicious vegetables delivered to them every week for several months. CSA members enjoy a direct connection to the farmer who produces their food and they can feel confident in the methods that went into growing it. Both farmer and member are contributing to a sustainable food system that emphasizes fresh, in-season produce and supports a local economy. OUR SUBSCRIPTION: The Appalachia Star Farm CSA is a vegetable subscription that begins mid-May and continues for 22 weeks through October. Each week, members receive a selection of seasonal produce as it becomes available. Although members' eating habits and produce needs vary greatly, we plan for our subscription to provide sufficient vegetables for two people. Of course, farming is an unpredictable occupation and as a member you become a stakeholder in the successes and failures of the farm. Poor yields in a certain crop will mean smaller amounts in your boxes. However, we grow a wide variety of crops to ensure that even if one crop has poor yields, we still have plenty of other vegetables to go around. DELIVERY: We deliver boxes to Charlottesville on Mondays. Nelson County locals have the option of picking up vegetable boxes on the farm or at the Rockfish Valley Community Center on Thursdays. Please see the "CSA Info" page of our website for more information about our deliveries, including times and locations. PRICE: Our 22-week delivery subscription is $300.00 plus a $20 delivery fee per household and sales tax totaling$328.00 Our 22-week on-farm pick-up subscription is $300.00 plus sales tax totaling$307.50 Farmer's Markets We sell vegetables, herbs, and plant starts at the following markets:
